Today is his 54th death anniversary.

Born on March 23, 1910 at Akbarpur in present-day Uttar Pradesh, Lohia received his high school education in Bombay and later did his intermediate studies at Banaras Hindu University. He earned a BA degree from the Vidyasagar College, Calcutta, and then went to Germany for further education.

Lohia was introduced to the Indian national movement by his father Heera Lal, who was a patriot and follower of Mahatma Gandhi. At a very young age, Lohia was taken along by his father on meeting with Gandhi Ji. Later, Lohia even formed a good bond with Jawaharlal Nehru, but never shuddered from disagreeing with him on several important issues.

Lohia played an important role in involving the nation’s youth in the struggle for independence from British imperial rule. Furthermore, he also guided youngsters on poetry, literature, and arts in order to help them understand the country better. Lohia had also participated in the movement to free Goa from Portuguese rule. He had emerged as one of the prominent leaders of the movement. He favoured Hindi as the country’s official language after independence.

Lohia took strong stands against social injustice, and caste discrimination, and gender inequality in Indian society. He firmly believed that the caste system robs society of new ideas and that women emancipation is vital for prosperity. Lohia worked hard to build a society that would ensure justice to the backward, poor and women. He passed away on October 12, 1967.
