Kati Bihu is celebrated on the first day of the ‘Kati’ month in the Assamese calendar — usually falling somewhere in mid-October. This year, it is observed on October 18. The festival marks the relocation of the rice crop and the beginning of the fresh harvest season. Kati Bihu is an observation of service, penance, and the hope for a better future. The festival is celebrated across the state of Assam — although all Assamese tribes have their own rituals and interpretations of the day. Lamps are lit outside the homes, and a pathway of bamboos is constructed as a trail for the ancestors.

Bihu are three festivals held in Assam; Bhogali or Magh Bihu is observed on January 13th or 14th, Rongali or Bohag Bihu is observed on April 14th or 15th, Kongali or Kati Bihu is observed in October.
All three of the Bihu are related to agriculture. The other two Bihu mark key dates in the harvest. This Bihu is celebrated during the time of relocation of the rice sapling - Kati means "cut".
Kati Bihu is also called Kongali ("Poor") as the granaries are usually empty and there is not much to eat at this time of the year.
This means Kati Bihu is not as flamboyant a festival as the other Bihus and the festivities are more sombre in nature.
This Bihu is celebrated by the lighting of lamps or saaki (candles) in different parts of the house. The main lamp is lit in the courtyard near the sacred Tulsi plant.
For Kati Bihu, the plant is cleaned and is placed on an earthen platform called a "Tulsi Bheti". Offerings and prayers are made to the Goddess Tulsi for the wellbeing of the family and for a good harvest. This formal procedure continues for the whole month of Kati.
In the paddy fields, farmers light a special type of lamp, called 'Akaxh Banti' (Sky candle). These mustard oil lamps are placed high on the tips of tall bamboo poles. It is believed these lamps are lit to guide ancestors to heaven, though they serve a practical purpose by drawing insects to the flame and their doom, which helps keep the crops healthy.

असम में बिहू त्योहार सबसे ऊपर मनाया जाता है। काटी बिहू या कोंगाली बिहू भी इसी का एक अंग है। ये बिहु हर साल अक्टूबर महीने में आता है। इस बिहु में थोड़ा कम उल्लास और हर्ष होता है। इस महीने में घरों में रखा अनाज लगभग खत्म हो जाता है, इसलिये असमी लोग अनाज भंडार, तुलसी, और धान के खेत के पास मिट्टी का दीया जलाते हैं। काटी बिहु थोड़ा गंभीरता और विचार विमर्श करने वाला पर्व है। जहां पुरानी फसल का अनाज खत्म हो चुका होता है और लोग अपने देवता की प्रार्थना करते हुए उनसे अच्छी फसल होने की कामना करते हैं। माता लक्ष्मी की मुख्यत: पूजा की जाती है।
परंपराएं
काटी बिहु के दौरान खेतों में दीये तो जलाए ही जाते हैं साथ ही में किसान अपने खेतों में बांस के डंडे से आकाश दीप लगाते हैं। ये आकाश दीप आत्माओं को स्वर्ग की तरफ रास्ता दिखाने के लिये जलाए जाते हैं।

काती बिहू त्यौहार को खासतौर पर भारत के असम राज्य में बडे हर्षो उल्लास के साथ मनाया जाता है। इस दिन स्त्री व पुरूष रंगीन व पारंपरिक सुन्दर कपड़े पहनते है। तथा एक-दूसरे के हाथ पकड़कर एक गोला बनाकर चारो तरफ घूते है। साथ में कुछ लोग ढोल व पीपा आदि बजाते है औरे वे सभी गोल-गोल घूमते हुए नृत्य करते है।
